Elias Ntakirutimana, youth leader Imbonerakure (youth affiliated with the CNDD-FDD party) of Nyagihotora hill, Matana commune, Bururi province, southern Burundi, was shot dead by the head of the local government in the evening of Christmas.
The gunman, a brigadier named Simon Ndayikengurukiye, was immediately arrested. According to his first statements at the time of his arrest, this position leader of Nyagihotora said he had acted in self-defense. He reported that Imbonerakure tried to disarm him believing he was drunk. He admits to having opened fire on these attackers and touched one of them who died on the spot. The detainee has been detained since Wednesday at Bururi Central Prison. Judicial sources say he will be tried in flagrant proceedings.
Some observers warn Bururi about a double standard because if it was an imbonerakure who would have committed this kind of package would benefit from the protection of the political and judicial authorities of the province.
